Elder trees are common on this Island. With their distinctive white flowers, followed later by black berries, they are greatly favoured by wildlife – especially birds.
Elders are trees of many myths and legends and they are considered to have many magical properties. They symbolise health and prosperity and are believed to hold many healing powers, however they also have the power to cause harm if they so wish.
It was believed that witches could transform themselves into elders, and traditionally their wands are made of elder branches.
