There are a few footpaths that go through forests and glens over the hills and lead to the now ruined church and graveyard of Clachan Duich. In the olden days mourners used these paths to walk and carry the coffin to its final resting place.
A mountaineer called Frank S Smythe has recounted a mysterious tale in his book “The Mountain Vision”. He was high up on the hill path in the Bealach na Sroine and stopped for a rest. He saw a group of men, women and children trudging down the hill towards him. All of a sudden a troop of armed men jumped up from the bracken and surrounding heather and slaughtered every single person in that unsuspecting group. Smythe couldn’t believe he had witnessed such an atrocity and when he reached the site himself, there was no trace or evidence of the massacre.
